Many bands claim to be era-defining. Few are. Primal Scream were. If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be at the birth of one of rock n roll's bastard offspring then this book is for you. Martin St John was Primal Scream's leather gloved flailing skeleton, bashing away on the tambourine in the 1960s obsessive, garage psyche , mid-eighties period. He was there, bang central , in the middle of the psychedelic maelstom-in the days before Screamadelica, in the days before Top Of The Pops, in the days before Glastonbury - and he has a story to tell. If you think you know Primal Scream, think again. The Psychedelic Confessions Of A Primal Screamer will introduce you to six Glaswegian garage heads hell bent on acid, hard kicks and psychedelia. And there's more again. . .

I've been a huge Primal Scream fan for more than 30 years, especially the earliest incarnation that Martin St. John was part of. St. John's memoir is a trip down memory lane. I moved to England from the US in 1985 at age 20 and instantly fell in love with bands like Primal Scream and the Jesus and Mary Chain, soaking in the sounds and copying the way the groups dressed! Sam Knee's coffee table book, A Scene In Between, is the perfect visual component to St. John's work. While reading 'Psychedelic Confessions' I felt like I was at the pub with the author, knocking back endless pints as we talked about the ups and downs of the early Scream and all the great music that inspired them, such as Love, the Byrds and the 13th Floor Elevators. From reading the book it becomes apparent that St. John is a massive music fan -- I love his accounts of the happenings at the Splash club -- makes me wish I could have taken a train up from London to Glasgow when it was happening. Oh well. St. John does a great job, describing his band mates and all the characters they meet on the road. I found it hard to put down and will revisit this book often. As an added bonus, St. John includes a lot of lists of music he was listening to at the time along with his idea of an alternate track listing for the Primal Scream debut full-length "Sonic Floor Groove."

Great read, I moved to Glasgow to meet these sort of people and revel in their laughter and hi-jinks and amazing music taste. I've never met any of them but the book will introduce some brilliant characters to your memory bank. Chatty and believable, this is a wee cracker. Not the greatest editing it has to be said, adds to the experience of feeling like someone in the pub just told you a load of funny stories. Psych soundtrack essential.
